Succession Planning: Resist the Urge to Fill in the Blank

  • Type: Listen & Learn Lecture, On Demand
  • Track: Strategic Leadership
While succession planning is viewed as futile to some, creating a viable succession plan is a pivotal component to ensure organizational success. The “Great Resignation” has left many well-crafted succession plans void of top talent and highlighted the underdeveloped talent pipeline of many organizations. Now we must redefine how we assess readiness, build future-forward succession plans, and communicate intent to talent. This session will discuss the importance of building future-focused succession plans along with development plans to close experience gaps. In addition, we will discuss succession metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of organizational succession plans in addition to readiness progression.

A World of Opportunity for a Triple Minority

  • Type: On Demand, Snap Session
  • Track: Diversity‚ Equity‚ & Inclusion (DEI)
As a black immigrant woman, I often find myself to be not a single or a double but a triple minority in most places I go. My work place is no exception. It is almost a habit of mine to look around board rooms and count how many minorities there are that meet my classification. I often find just myself. It is easy to look at that and feel discouraged. It is even easier to give excuses on our color, gender and place of origin for any obstacle we encounter in our career. But there is another side to the coin. At this session, we will hear about how to maximize our potential and rise above to harvest a world of opportunity as a triple minority. We will discuss ways to excel and build support around us.

Actually, I was just Thinking…Make your Words work for you

  • Type: Listen & Learn Lecture, On Demand
  • Track: Career Management
We’re all moving away from being unnecessarily sorry, but do you still catch yourself asking, “Am I making sense”? Do you delegate tasks to others, but your requests are constantly ignored? Did someone else actually say it better in that meeting? We use words all day long, so make them work for you. In this session, you will learn and recognize language patterns used by women in spoken and written communications, identify your own language pitfalls, and get inspired to find better alternatives without diminishing yourself. We encourage you to apply the techniques you learn, so the next time you speak up, give a presentation, or send that quick email, your words are impactful, intentional, and perceived the way you want.

Becoming an Innovator: Capturing and Communicating Your Ideas Effectively

  • Type: Listen & Learn Lecture, On Demand
  • Track: Self Management
As engineers, we all know how to think creatively, solve a problem, and bring ideas to life in one form or another. But communicating ideas in a way to gather support, invoke action, and just as important… get credit for the idea, can sometimes be more challenging than the idea itself. Often, if an idea isn’t initially well-received, it can be assumed it was a bad idea and abandoned, sometimes creating doubt and future hesitation to share more ideas. But in reality, it wasn’t always the idea, but the timing and the way the vision was communicated. In this session, Christine will share her experience overcoming her own self-doubt to generate dozens of Invention Disclosures and New Project Ideas every year and outline the tools that participants can use to start documenting and communicating new ideas with success.

Navigating Allyship and Inclusion in College and the Workforce

  • Type: On Demand, Snap Session

As someone who identifies as nonbinary, I know there are several struggles that members of the LGBTQ+ community experience in professional environments. I am hoping to share my experiences as a college undergraduate who recently went through the internship job application process for the first time. Being out in a professional setting can be terrifying, especially since there are no federal antidiscrimination laws protecting people based off gender identity or sexual orientation. By the end of this session, members of the LGBTQ+ community will have a better understanding on how to navigate professional environments while still remaining true to themselves. Allies of the LGBTQ+ community will also gain insight on how promote inclusion in college and the workforce. Promoting acceptance across all minority groups is crucial for creating healthy workplace environments and will help build the future of professional industries.

Women are already disproportionately affected by digital transformation and are also currently under-represented in STEM-related professions. Instead of allowing automation and digital disruption to further impact disparities between the genders, the reskilling revolution presents a great opportunity for women to transform their skills and demonstrate their agile mindsets to meet the demands of today’s workplace and for companies to make meaningful progress in the effort for gender diversity.

Inclusive Leadership: A Focus on Self, Others and Systems

  • Type: Listen & Learn Lecture, On Demand
  • Track: Diversity‚ Equity‚ & Inclusion (DEI)
Inclusive cultures start with inclusive leaders. What a leader says and does defines the experience of their individual team members. Simmons University’s groups the behaviors of inclusive leaders into six defined actions – becoming aware, becoming an ally and upstander and becoming a change agent. The model spotlights the internal work of appreciating difference and building awareness. The second practices focuses on supporting others. The last practice is all about advocating for impactful, systemic change. Engage in an active session of self-discovery. Discuss ways to show-up as an advocate in your workplace and community. Leverage your relationship capital to drive change in your organization. Identify your next action following the session and resources to keep the learning going after the workshop. This session is a dance between moments of self-reflection, learning and application.

Engineers today tend to stick to their technical area of expertise and are anxious about venturing beyond. This mindset limits their overall potential to advance their career. The purpose of the session is to motivate the participants to expand their knowledge into business interface. Many engineers have great ideas for products or business, but can’t turn them into reality because of the lack of necessary skills. An MBA can help unlock an engineer’s business acumen by introducing knowledge regarding marketing, finance and commercialization. With the introduction of people development, management and leadership skills, an MBA can help improve an engineer’s communication and collaboration; as well as their competency when dealing with conflict or negotiation. In the session, Rachel will visit the different opinions about whether an engineer needs an MBA, pros and cons; she will also share her personal experience of how an MBA helped her technical career in Verizon.

What happens when you are the only engineer in the room? In school, engineering students are surrounded by other engineering students. It takes guidance and mentorship from other engineers for a new grad engineer to learn and develop technical and career skills, especially in an industry that is new to them. Entering a group full of PhD-level scientists as a new grad engineer was a daunting task, and I want to share my story about how I navigated my transition into my first full-time engineering role. I want to share how to find mentors in what can feel like an isolating role, as well as how to communicate effectively with colleagues from different educational backgrounds. Finding directive and belonging is an important piece of the transition from school to industry, and I believe there are lessons learned I can share to other new grad engineers joining interdisciplinary teams.

In this presentation, we will discuss how you can build your very own Personal Board of Advisors for your career. We will take a look at how to identify who your most powerful champions and advocates are, and how to engage them as you elevate your career trajectory.

Clean Water and Wastewater Equity for Vulnerable Communities

  • Type: Listen & Learn Lecture, On Demand
  • Track: Diversity‚ Equity‚ & Inclusion (DEI)
Water is one of the most basic and critical resources for sustaining life and economies. The delivery of safe, reliable drinking water and the responsible handling and treatment of wastewater are major responsibilities of local government. This can be a challenge for many vulnerable communities as the costs for maintaining water systems continue to rise while the burden increasingly falls on those less able to afford it. The infrastructure needed to deliver clean drinking water and to treat wastewater is complex. Recent water-related events highlight institutional and management challenges faced by underserved communities. This session explores four questions: What is the infrastructure needed to deliver clean drinking water and treat wastewater? What are some engineering challenges associated with that infrastructure? What are the impacts of water inequity on underserved communities? What are example solutions industry and government are introducing to address the inequities associated with access to clean water?

Future Leaders: What I Learned From my Teenage Daughter

  • Type: On Demand, Snap Session

Learning is bidirectional. As I watch my daughter grow, it is humbling how much I have also grown as a person along with her. Today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders are more aware of the world around them, engaging in both the real & virtual world. They are both isolated and connected. As I raise her, I find myself constantly balancing her academic success with instilling human values. The pressure to succeed, as a young adult, is so immense that they forget to be alive and enter the work force often burnt out. As a parent, leader and mentor, one must pause and reflect on finding the optimum equilibrium in pursuing academic/technical excellence and nurturing kindness, sharing and empathy. In this snap session, I will discuss how as leaders we get caught in our own web creating barriers, becoming averse to risk taking and often forget to value success holistically.

Have you ever had the experience of feeling different? Are you the only female engineer on a team full of men or the only woman at the leadership table? Unfortunately, many women get the message in the workplace that they need to blend in, downplay their gender, age, background, accent, being a mother, a career woman, and suppress their uniqueness. We wear our differences in the workplace like scars. Most of us will have a moment in our lives that changes everything, when we’ve had enough, when we realize we’re strong enough to be different. We realize that what makes us different, disguised as weakness, is actually our superpower. It’s the reason why you got that project, that job, you offer a much-needed perspective, unique skills and innovative ideas. What makes you different or weird? Convert that into fuel. Make it your strength. Then, it can never be your weakness.

Non US-citizens made up 17% of the US workforce in 2019, according to the American Immigration Council. In STEM, this percentage is much higher, with the number in 2020 being closer to 40%. Thus, chances are high that as a student or professional in STEM, you have either studied or worked with someone born, brought up, or looking to move back to another country. As our classrooms and workforce get more global, it is not enough to merely be accepting of individuals from diverse countries and backgrounds, but also important to educate oneself of the trials they may have faced. This panel will unpack several challenges, biases, and stereotypes that immigrating and non-immigrating foreign nationals may face in the US. At the end of the panel, attendees will leave with resources to better equip and develop themselves as allies and advocates for an important group contributing to a global economy.

Design of Experiments (DOE) is a branch of Applied Statistics and it is one Six Sigma Quality tools. Although this scientific method is often used behind the scenes for decision making, it has limitless applications in a wide field of industries. For example, we could determine the effect of stress and anxiety on performance of a team of astronauts in Space. In Marketing it can allow a company to gain an insight into the vital factors influencing a customer’s buying decision. In Cosmetic and Toiletries Formulation we could determine how raw materials have impact on the product performance (Hair Care Products, Face Mask, Perfume, Skin Lotions, etc.). As technology advances, processes will likely become more complex. This requires techniques to identify the “vital few” factors to directs the processes to its best setting to exceed quality and productivity. The power of DOE provides an effective tool to achieve these objectives.

Our employees are more cognizant of how quickly their lives and the world can change. COVID has snapped us out of inertia and forced us to take the time to BE with ourselves and we could actually hear that voice that we drowned out…”Am I doing want I truly wanted to do or living the life I want? This job, that I dedicate so many hours of my life, is it aligned to my purpose and passion?” And the answer, is not exactly what we want to hear. This session is a guided journey that I had to take that allowed me to align my purpose and passion to my roles in corporate America. We spend the majority of our lives at work and many are struggling on how to make that time more meaningful not only to others that make decisions about our careers, but even to ourselves.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have been around for years. Originally, these initiatives focused solely on increasing diversity numbers, but as the years have progressed, companies have grown to appreciate the importance of DEI, both in their numbers and in their practices. In 2022, however, many are still not doing the work authentically. In fact, recently it has been reported only 15 to 20 percent of S&P 500 companies tie DEI goals to executive performance reviews. Beyond just good intentions, it requires a program-level strategic framework that builds accountability. In this session, we share how to develop a 3rd party mindset to assess your current state and create a more impactful DEI practice. You will learn how to embed DEI into the fabric of your organization. You will also learn key components of a dashboard, which can be shared within your organization and with those whom you conduct business.

Over the last several years, many companies have made great strides in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion of marginalized groups in the workplace, but these efforts are frequently targeted towards singular identities; for instance, female, black, or disabled employees. While these initiatives have undoubtedly improved company culture and employee engagement, they risk leaving some behind. What good is a robust mentoring program if none of the mentors speak your language? How can someone take advantage of expanded healthcare coverage if they can’t even get to the doctor? By learning about intersectionality and applying it in a wholistic manner to DE&I initiatives, companies can ensure that the time and money directed towards making the workplace more inclusive is well spent. This applies on a personal level tool! Culture is built and felt on an individual level, and when individuals feel empowered to work towards clearing roadblocks, everyone benefits.

Transferring from a community college to a four-year university is a critical transition for women in engineering. The process can be problematic for students and institutions alike, with transfer students often viewed as underprepared and universities perceived as unwelcoming and impervious to challenges facing transfer students. While efforts to support students have grown, an honest discussion of experiences, perceptions, expectations, and biases around transfer is needed. These topics go directly to the issues of equity and inclusion in engineering, as community college women are disproportionately women of color, first-generation, and socioeconomically disadvantaged. This panel includes transfer students and community college and university faculty with knowledge of the transfer process. With audience input, the panel will explore underlying issues around transfer. Students will openly discuss their transfer experiences. Programs that show promise in supporting transfer students will be discussed. Anyone interested in broadening the participation of women in engineering is welcome!

Humans have lived and thrived on coasts for thousands of years, but only in the past 50 years has a formalized engineering for the coasts evolved. With sea levels rising, the need for coastal engineering rises with it. Why is this important? Over half of the globe is affected, directly or indirectly, by what happens at the shore, whether it be commercial, environmental, or recreational; there are a lot of demands to satisfy. Traditional engineering solutions historically take a brute force approach to design, while the modern philosophy of coastal engineering works with nature, mimicking coastal processes within the solutions. This means considering the entirety of the ecosystem impacted by coastal work and designing the best solution for all parties, including Mother Nature. As we transition from “STEM” to “STEAM”, we emphasize the importance of creativity in coastal engineering, making our designs as aesthetically pleasing as they are practical.
