WE22 FAQs

How do I find Tours at WE22?

If you’ve signed up for a tour at WE22 during registration, meet at the North Transit Center.

Directions to the North Transit Center:
Walk on the 2nd floor of the George R. Brown Convention Center towards the Marriott. Go over the overpass and straight down the escalators to arrive at the meeting place.

We recommend getting to the tour meeting location at least 10 minutes prior to the departure time.

How do I add my resume to the SWE Career Center

For those attending WE22 virtually or onsite, you may upload your resume and tag that you are attending WE22 so that WE22 exhibitors (all of whom have access to our Career Center) can find your resume and set-up virtual or in-person interviews. Download the steps to upload your resume and tag WE22 here.

What will security look like at WE22?

At WE22, SWE will ban firearms or weapons of any kind from entering the George H. Brown Convention Center for the duration of the event.

During this time, all doors to the Center will be locked and entry will only be permitted through the two main doors on the Avenida De Las Americas, an exhibitor dock entrance, the second floor entrance from the Marriott, and the second floor entrance from the Hilton.

All those entering the George H. Brown Convention Center will be subject to metal detectors and bag checks. SWE reserves the right to refuse entry to those who do not cooperate with these safety protocols. As SWE has done in the past, a mix of armed and non-armed security professionals will help monitor doors and checkpoints.

Discounts for University Faculty and Staff and/or Section Faculty Advisors and Counselors

For every 5 students who register at a University, SWE will provide 1 comped registration for a University faculty or staff person to attend WE22.

Email membership@swe.org to verify registrations and receive discounts for faculty and staff.

How many COVID-19 shots do I need to be considered vaccinated?

At WE22, we are not requiring COVID-19 booster shoots (although we strongly encourage them). You are considered fully vaccinated if you had the full number of shots for the vaccination type you received.

Read more information here.

Do children need to show a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination?

SWE is not requiring that children aged 17 and under to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test or COVID-19 vaccination.

Where is WE22 Located?

WE22 will be held October 20-22, 2022 both in person at the George R. Brown Convention Center and virtually.

The Convention Center is located at 1001 Avenida de las Americas, Houston, TX 77010.

How do I access the virtual platform?

All attendees will be granted access to the WE22 virtual platform (which will contain live networking and meet-ups, speed networking and all pre-recorded sessions) several days prior to the start of the Annual Conference on October 20.

Will there be a virtual Career Fair?

The WE22 Career Fair will be in-person only. While there will not be a virtual career fair option, there will still be ways for WE22 attendees to engage with potential employers virtually.

All attendees are strongly encouraged to upload their resume to the SWE Career Center and flag it as “attending WE22”; all exhibitors will have access to this resume pool and will actively reach out to individuals with whom they wish to speak or interview.

How do I engage with exhibitors virtually?

While there will not be a virtual career fair for WE22, there are still ways for WE22 attendees to engage with potential employers virtually.

All attendees are strongly encouraged to upload their resume to the SWE Career Center and flag it as “attending WE22”; all exhibitors will have access to this resume pool and will actively reach out to individuals with whom they wish to speak or interview.

Does SWE accommodate dietary restrictions?

We are unable to accommodate special meals at our sit-down collegiate luncheons, however, we will have options available that are Gluten-Free and Vegetarian/Vegan (no dairy). SWE does collect dietary restriction information for special event meals. No beef or seafood will be served.

How do I get to the George R. Brown Convention Center for WE22?

Houston, Texas is close to a major international airport and within driving distance for many attendees in the greater region. Please visit the convention center website directly for information about parking and transportation.

Is membership included with my registration?

Please see our registration page for more information.

What information is available for accepted speakers?

All speakers are required to record their session prior to WE22 and present in person. There will be no invitations for virtual-only participation. Speakers will record their sessions on the Hopin platform and there will be no recording of sessions or uploading them outside of the platform.

Accepted speakers who confirm participation in a WE22 session will receive various WE22 speaker resources, including the WE Speaker Orientation, a WE22 PPT template, and content outline, and branded Zoom backgrounds to use while recording sessions.

How does housing for Collegiate Section Presidents work for WE22?

The WE22 Collegiate Section President housing is generously supported by SWE and organizations that employ engineers and technologists.

FY23 Collegiate Section Presidents may opt-in for WE22 Collegiate Section President Housing during WE22 Registration.

This special promotion allows our FY23 Collegiate Section Presidents to receive a significant discount towards accommodations for four nights—Wednesday, October 19 – Saturday, October 22, departing Sunday, October 23—at the Hilton Americas Hotel, Houston, TX.

To receive this benefit, FY23 Collegiate Section Presidents must sign-up and pay the $100 fee through registration by Sept. 10, 2022. This rate is a steep discount off the regular price for a four-night hotel stay. SWE will cover the remainder of the room and tax charges.

All those who sign up for this benefit must be verified as FY23 Collegiate Section Presidents to be eligible. At time of check-in, FY23 Collegiate Section Presidents must show a valid form of identification and place a credit card on file for incidental charges.

Information for Collegiate Section Presidents:

  • The room will be a standard king or queen/queen.

  • You will not be sharing with another Collegiate Section President.

  • The amount due for Collegiate Section Presidents will be $25.00 per night flat fee that totals $100 for four nights. Participants cannot opt to select only a portion of the four-night stay.

  • Hotel confirmation information will be sent by late September 2022.

What sort of disability access is there for WE22?

SWE works to ensure that we are responding to all special needs and disability support services requested to the best of our ability.

For in-person attendees at WE22, SWE will provide mobility scooters on-site, ensure the facility is accessible and can provide CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) service upon request. Requests must be submitted by Sept. 15, 2022, to guarantee facilitation.

For the virtual WE22 conference, SWE will use a mobile-friendly platform with easy navigation, as well as provide closed captioning for all recorded and major sessions. Most sessions on the virtual platform will be pre-recorded and available to engage with according to the viewer’s own schedule. Each year, SWE works to ensure that the Annual Conference website is ADA compliant to the best of our ability. Outside of this, however, SWE is not in the position to provide in-person assistance to virtual attendees.

How do I register if I am from Nigeria?

SWE’s credit card processor for WE22 registration does does not accept most credit cards from Nigeria. This is out of SWE’s control and is in the hands of the credit card processor.

A Nigerian resident may register by: phone, email or onsite.

If you are from Nigeria and planning to attend WE22, please email SWE@xpressreg.net and ask for an early-bird registration to be created for you to pay onsite with cash. You may also register by calling 774-247-4026.

What can I expect in the Lactation Room?

SWE is pleased to provide safe, clean, and private spaces at WE22 for mothers or parents to express breast milk or feed their  infant. SWE will provide comfortable chairs next to electrical outlets, bottled water, and snacks. Mini-fridges will also be provided. Parents should plan to bring their own pumps and accessories.

Why is SWE Coming to Houston in 2022?

As SWE is set to open WE22 in Houston this fall, we continue to seek ways to balance the shifting political climate with the timing and planning necessary to execute a large and complex meeting like WE22.

To our members—we have heard your voice about planning events in locations that are hostile to women and SWE’s core values. You are passionate about equality and the very characteristics that make you a strong and vital force in your career are the same forces that propel you to speak out when you see injustice.

And you know injustice when you see it.

When the tide of legislation put in place in Texas began making national news, you spoke, and SWE listened. We sent a letter to Governor Abbott letting him know that we will not be bringing any future events to Texas, until the unwelcoming environment changes for individuals who are women, transgender, or gender non-conforming.

In the letter, we wrote: “The unwelcoming environment in your state for women, transgender, and gender non-conforming individuals created through these policies makes the state of Texas untenable as a location for any future events.”

We will not bring future events to Texas while current legislation is in place, but our existing commitment to host WE22 does not allow us to cancel or move the event without catastrophic financial consequences. SWE signed the contract to host WE22 in Houston, Texas in December of 2016, before recent legislation was passed.

Complaints that SWE prioritizes making money above our mission are understandable given the heated nature of this debate, but you should know that fulfilling our mission requires good financial stewardship. This approach allows us to maintain the financial strength to better negotiate with more inclusive locations in the future.

SWE has more than 3,000 members in Texas and many of our employer partners have their headquarters or large facilities in Texas. For SWE to thrive, we must continue to navigate today’s challenging circumstances and provide a space for our members, including their differing opinions, to come together around the mission of advancing the engineering profession.

We will do everything possible to make those attending WE22 feel safe, welcome, and included. For those that choose not to attend, we hope you will participate in the hybrid event virtually.

As SWE moves forward, we will carefully evaluate the states for our future major events while also balancing the need to host events that are accessible to our members.
